How each provider handles it

It is in the catalogue but disabled, so nothing calls it.

What it does

The original network identifier, predating EIP-155. It returns a decimal string where `eth_chainId` returns a hex quantity.

They are the same number on every major network today, but they are not the same field, and `eth_chainId` is the one to use.

Returns

String — the network ID in decimal.

Things that bite

Decimal "1", not hex "0x1". Code that compares the two without converting will silently disagree.

Why it is measured

Kept as a legacy compatibility check and disabled by default, since almost nothing should still be reading it.

Called every 900 seconds per endpoint, with jitter so the fleet does not hit a provider in lockstep.
